How to Choose Agate Slice Place Cards for Your Wedding
Share
Agate slice place cards do two jobs at once. They tell each guest where to sit, and they give everyone a small piece of stone to take home. Because every slice is cut from real agate, no two look alike, and that is a big part of why couples love them. It also means there are a few more decisions to make than with a printed card. This guide walks through them in order.
Start with your color palette
Color is usually the first choice, and it sets the tone for the whole table.
Natural or color-dyed?
Agate's natural colors are fairly soft: greys, whites and creams. At KNOCKNOCK ART, our grey white agate place cards are the only natural, undyed option. Every other color we carry (blue, green, purple, rose, yellow, orange red and black) is genuine agate that has been color-dyed. Dyed agate is still real stone with its own banding; the dye simply adds a richer color. If you want to know more, read our guide to natural vs dyed agate.
Matching your wedding theme
A few simple pairings that work well:
- Grey white: neutral, works with almost any palette, lovely with greenery and white florals.
- Blue or green: coastal, garden and "something blue" themes.
- Rose or purple: romantic, spring and floral-heavy tables.
- Black: modern, moody or black-tie events, especially with white or gold lettering.
- Yellow or orange red: warm, autumn or desert weddings.
Can't pick just one? Our mixed-color calligraphy listing lets you choose from 7 colors.
Think about size and natural variation
Our slices measure about 2.5 to 3.5 inches. That's big enough to hold a full name comfortably and small enough to sit on a plate, napkin or beside a glass without crowding the setting.
Because agate is natural stone, each slice has its own shape, banding and edge. Some are rounder, some are more oval, and the pattern inside changes from piece to piece. If you want perfectly identical cards, agate isn't the right choice. If you like the idea of every guest getting a one-of-a-kind piece, it's ideal.
Decide on the lettering
Hand calligraphy or DIY?
You have two routes:
- Order them hand-lettered. Our custom calligraphy agate slice place cards are written by hand with each guest's name, so they arrive ready to place.
- Letter them yourself. If you or a friend does calligraphy, our blank agate slices are a good base for a DIY project. Practice on a spare slice first, since stone behaves differently from paper.
Check names carefully
With custom work, the names you send are the names we write. Before you submit your list, double-check spellings, titles and any special characters. A spreadsheet export from your RSVP list is the easiest way to avoid typos.
Plan your timeline
Place cards are often one of the last details couples finalize, because they depend on the final guest list. Leave yourself enough time.
Our processing times
These are calendar days, before shipping time:
- Blank slices: 1–3 days
- Hand-lettered, under 50 pieces: about 5 days
- Hand-lettered, 50–200 pieces: 5–12 days
Orders ship from Guangdong, China, so add delivery time on top. If your date is close, ask about a rush order by leaving a note at checkout or emailing sissishu@outlook.com.
Order a few extras
Last-minute guests and name changes happen. Ordering a couple of extra blank slices gives you a backup, and the leftovers make nice keepsakes.
Know the policies before you buy
Because each hand-lettered slice is personalized, custom items can't be returned. Blank slices can be returned within 14 days (the buyer pays return shipping). If anything arrives damaged, please record an unboxing video when you open the package; it lets us arrange a refund or replacement quickly.
Display ideas
- Lay a slice on each folded napkin.
- Lean it against a water glass or wine glass.
- Line them up on an escort-card table in alphabetical order, grouped by table number.
- Use small stands or easels if you want them upright.
